Hey guys, I blew a tube today and I'm trying to decide on a new pair to use in my 75 reverb head. I have about 3 that I'm thinking about, and I'd like to hear your opinions. I currently have The Philips ECG in it, and i'd love to put them back in, but I cant afford to shuck out another 100 bucks, and I'm looking for something I can drive a bit harder anyway. Also, I want to make sure that these tubes will last in the amp with such a high plate voltage! Tungsol 5881 Tesla 6l6GC Shuguang KT66 | ||

If you were to ge REAL tesla tubes from the early years, I'd say them. THe KT's are a little harsh for a MM since they happen to be kind of clean anyway. My fender amps use JJ 6L6's and I love them but we all have different tastes. I don't remember what the plate voltage on the 75's is but I think they dropped it a little when they went to the 6L6's. Let me know. I use NOTHING but JJ's in my Musicmans but they are E34L's. The Tungsol is just more smke and mirrors from the Sovtek people, although I DO hear pretty good things about them but their longevity hasn't been proven yet. I own a Music Man 112RP-100. Some years ago I bought several sets of NOS Phillips/Sylvania 7581A s to use in my blackface Twin Reverb. That particular amp HATED the 7581A s and I have been using those tubes in the Music Man. IF you can find a set of 7581A s, I'd recommend them highly. They are more expensive than the new tubes made now but worth ever bit of what you'll pay. I use SED (Wing C)6L6GC s in the Twin and I like them very much. These are the tubes that used to be sold under the Svetlana name. They sound very nice and last well. I haven't tried them in my MM, but I don't know of any reason why they wouldn't work well. I have never tried the JJ brand that Mike mentioned, I just wanted to mention that the SED have been very good tubes in my experience. | ||

I have an HD150 which I just put in a set of 4 JJ tubes in and I think they are fantastic for the money. I haven't tried many others though. They do seem to be a very clean tube so it may not be what you are looking for. Previous to this it was running on only 2 Philips STR tubes. |
