Just changed original speakers from my 210HD130 (2275-130 EX, SS driver) with 2 Eminence legend 105 8 ohms, ie total load 4 ohms as there are in parallel and select amp on 4 ohms. The sound is very sharp, lots of treble, brightness, weak bass. I removed one speaker wire (so one speaker – 8 ohms) changed the corresponding load for 8 ohms and surprise, the sound is much richer, less bright, bass more punchy … Anyone as experienced a difference on sound when loaded at 4 or 8 ohms ? Should I go for 2 speakers 16 ohms for getting 8 ohms when wire in parallel, or adjust bias ( today, at 3.9 ohms resistance, its 25mv/32mV) or change something else (preamp LM307H – inverter LM 1458 ) ?. For a recall, I changed the LM 1458N recently (see my post in “urgent request for help, 210HD French export, voltage service). Thank’s for comments, Christophe |

Yes what ohm and how you wire it makes a difference in sound as much as what speaker is being used in the first place.you can wire it up in sreies , parallel,or even both strait(second speaker using the external speaker jack, lots of options hope it just don't cost ya a fortune to find the one you love. |

Thank's Bill for your comments. Besides type of speakers, my question was generaly speaking, 8 ohms loading speakers will provide more deeper sound (more bass, less brightness, less trebble) than 4 ohms loading speakers ? Does it make sence (this case at 8 ohms the OT will work at full wiring in its coil); Am I right ? Christophe |

Still thinking... wiring the two speakers in serie (16 ohms) and selecting 8 ohms on amp should even sound deeper ? Is IT a safe configuration for OT/tubes ? Thank's for your feedback/experience. Christophe |

I'm more interested in learning, when you say that the bass was worse with two speakers, if you had the speakers wired out of phase. In parallel it should be hot to hot, return to rerurn. Also, did you CHECK the speakers thwmselves and see if they were marke correctly? Out of phase speakers WILL sound thin. I don't like overloading the OT with a 16 ohm load on 8 ohms but it should take it. |

Thank's Mike, I will check back but I DID paid attention to to polarity (hot to hot, return to rerurn), I just noticed that on one speaker the polarity was just written , on the other it was stamped. Did not remenber that out of phase speakers sounds thin.I have just try serie (16 ohm )configustion and it's better but not as I would expect. I will check the polarity of speakers with a battery (membrane out or in depending on right polarity /battery polarity. You MIGHT be right. Anyway I also check back the amp on my 4*10 (celestion in I think) and the sound is awesome. Thank's for your reply, Christophe |

MERCI BEAUCOUP MIKE, Your were right, speakers were out of phase. One speaker as the wrong polarity indications. I went back to 4 ohms parallel wiring. I prefer this setting as well. This site is so good ! Christophe |

What I like to do to bring up the mid's and cut the bright down a little is to plug into input #2 on the amp. It's not as hot as input #1, and it's great for a quick fix when you need it. Hope that helps also. Good luck, Dave. |

Yes you are right Dave, I've already done that especially when using active effects. Now every thing are back in order and the amp sound awesome, headroom, bass, trebble, mids are all fine. Christophe |

Just the thread I needed. I'm down to a 65 2-10. Basically I am scared of playing electric since I don't have any Gibbys set up (hum buckers), which pups really seem to snarl on a MM amp. But the other day I fired up the 2-10. After a few minutes of annoying static and other quirks, she came to life...dead quiet at full volume depending on where the knobs on the no 1 channel were set (they seem to affect channel 2 on this amp~a thing I always wonder about as well). Terry...if you're around...does this mean anything? The amp has always shined. It sounded good. I found myself playing fairly well, hearing all range of the strings and not being inhibited by the sheer volume of sound. But later...I saw that the ohm switch was in the 8 position. As soon as I flipped it to 4, all my efforts at playing pretty much ceased. It could be that the coffee wore off...or maybe a psychological feint. Idk. My question is: What exactly happens to my amp when I play in the 8 position? |

My guess is that the 8 position acts like a mild compressor. It seemed a little louder, but within a flatter range of frequency. I never used pedals though I would enjoy experimenting. My feeling about these amps is that they are hard to play simply because they are bring too much fidelity (purity) to the fore. If you aren't feeling 100%, then all you hear is the bad stuff. I have an ongoing love hate relationship going on, basically. But in my heart I know they are great amplifiers. The trouble is that there's nothing to hide behind until you dime the thing, basically. At that point...I fear an intruder may catch me in the act, ruining the experience and causing me to shut down for a year or two, as is my custom. |
