In the second movie of H.B. "Toby" Halicki's "Gone in 60 Seconds" trilogy ("Junkman", 1982), a black-badge Music Man 212 performs in a supporting role as a stunt amplifier! About 38 minutes into the film, one of the dozens of car chase scenes leads to a James Dean Festival in California. As the cars approach center festival, everyone clears off the stage leaving only the Music Man 212 center stage. Our hero's Cadillac hits the stage going about 60 miles an hour in Reverse, destroying the front half of the stage but the car Clears the MM 212 and a slight kiss of the rear tire simply pushes it 6-8 inches to the right as the car punches a hole through the stage's backdrop! Then the two pursuing vehicles (one a Ford Thunderbird, the other a Dodge) crash through on the same path side-by-side and Also clear the MM 212, but one of these cars also has a rear tire kiss the amp as they pass. This cause the amp to bounce and rock but it remains upright and is NOT carried off the rear of the stage! Now THAT'S Music Man tough! But wait a minute... look at that last photo. For the last stunt shot, the amplifier was replaced with an empty Music Man cabinet! There is no amp chassis or speakers in this one? Were they all fakes? The first two pictures look real enough to me! The amp looks brand new (talk about product placement!) and is only on screen a few seconds in two different camera angles (it is really cool to watch frame-by-frame on the DVD). It is obvious that the amp was written into the stunt! Even the stunt amp appears to have had a stunt double! During the entire sequence there doesn't appear to be a visible line cord (still tucked into the rear no doubt). Oh, the World Record part... the movie "Junkman" holds the record for the most vehicles destroyed in a single movie (150 cars, trucks, vans, buses, boats and aircraft) in the Guiness World Book of Records! Runner up was Toby's first movie, the cult classic "Gone in 60 Seconds". No MM amplifiers were harmed in the making of this film. Steve (Message edited by admin on August 07, 2004) |

Just a note on something else I noticed about this "stunt" amp: If you look carefully at the grill badges, you will notice that the model badge is the older "Silver" style used from 1974-1979 while the MM logo badge is a later "Black" badge used from 1980-1984. So, we have hybrid badges on a phony "stunt" amp! This re-enforces my theory that this amp mock-up was put together at the Music Man factory specifically for this movie and made from whatever reject parts they had laying around! Steve |
