Is there any way to tell what wattage of a speaker by it's serial number? | ||

i dont think you can on the eminence alnico speakres made in the mid 70's to 80 youll get a code like 677520 which means eminence (67) 1975 (75) in the 20th week i would presume that the speakers used in a 210 130 would be 65 watts each? | ||

I have a 210/65 and want to install original speakers however I have no clue as to what the original speakers were. I got it in a trade back in 74/75 and it has been stored ever since. it has 2 8 ohm Fender Inst. in it right now. I do not believe the 8ohm is right.. I believe they should be 16 ohm wired in series Any help would be nice Thanks | ||

Actually, the Music Man 2-speaker combos have a pair of 8-ohm loudspeakers wired in parallel for a 4-ohm total load. Unlike every other MM combo amp model (but just like the heads), the 2-speaker combos have their speaker jacks wired in series so the total impedance goes UP when an external cabiner is connected. This allows you to set the amp on 4-ohms for stand-alone use and connect an external 2-12 4-ohm or 8-ohm cabinet while setting the impedance switch to the 8-ohm position. Music Man seemed to have a GOOD policy regarding speakers... every driver they bought was 8-ohms! That way, they could limit the variety they had to stock (which was still considerable since there were 3 or 4 styles of each size... Low Power, High Power, Bass or Electro-Voice EVM premium). Check out the Model Chart on this site and observe the cabinet impedances for all the MM speaker cabs. All the 1 and 4-speaker cabs have a cab impedance of 8-ohms but all the 2-speaker cabs have a 4-ohm impedance. That tells the story right there and the same holds true for the combos. It seems that the majority of Music Man's standard-line speakers were purchased from Eminence. I noticed that the 10" low-power drivers that were used in the 1974-1980 65 series were made by CTS-Utah (and were underated and cheap so they failed without too much effort!), but this was about the only difference in standard drivers I ever noticed. The Eminence Vintage 12 would probably be a good substitute and can be had fairly cheap from Dave @ Avatar Speakers. Steve |
