I've got a chance to score some NOS Jan Phillips tubes, would these work out well in my 210-65 and 130 HD amps to substitute the 12ax7's? I know that they do work in that position, but I had thought they were used as preamp tubes, till I did some reading through the archives, so now I'm not so sure about their long range effect on the amps. | ||

I'm not really sure about their use in MM amps but Fender used 12at7's for years as a PI. Shouldn't be any different. Hopefully, someone with more brains than me will be able to tell you for sure. Mike. | ||

The 12AT7 & 12AU7 have less gain than the 12AX7 but are otherwise in the same tube family so the substitution ought to work within reason. Whether you like the sound or performance of the amp depends on your ears, your expectations and the design into which you are installing the replacement tube. It certainly won't hurt to try it! I have a NOS 12AU6 and a NOS 12GN7 that I got in a "lot" purchase. I was wondering if I can substitute any of these for a 12AU7 or a 12AT7? | ||

Without looking at the specifications for the tubes I couldn't be sure, but my gut reaction is NO. The 12AT7, 12AX7, 12AU7 and 12AY7 differ in their nomenclature by a single letter, identifying them as members of the same family. The tube numbers you quote are for different families altogether. Preamp tubes are relatively cheap, so why risk an amplifier by plugging in tubes that could cause internal problems or smoke? | ||
