Hi Everyone,

I have an RD 100 112 plugged into a quad box of 12 inch celestions

i have been noticing my clean channel breaking up somewhat when i strum the guitar, the harder i play the worse the breakup...

my volume is around about 4 or 5 and the gain setting sits at about 4 (the gain seems to rise up quite sharply at 3.5 anything less than 3.5 the gain is not responsive, very quiet..)

i play a rickenbacker 650D with a few pedals in a loop (they all claim to be true bypass)

ive recently had the amp serviced and alot of parts were replaced for new...(the clean channel was fuzzy before this too)

any help on the possible cause would be greatly appreciated... i bought this amp based upon the reputation of having a fantastic clean tone, but it seems my amp is currently not able to produce this..

thanks,
nick

Not really familiar with the RD's as far as controls but if the "gain" is a master volume, try it on 10 and the channel lower. That should clean it up. Mike.

I was wondering if there was a way to get my gain to roll on smoother - Is it something to do with the pot? at the moment there is no increase in gain till about 3.5 then all of a sudden it kicks in quite loudly - perhaps if i can smooth this i might be able to find a cleaner tone at a decent volume level.. any thoughts?

sounds like the pot is dirty. does it also sound scratchy when you adjust it? with the amp off, twist it back and forth several times and see if that helps. might need to spray some contact cleaner in the pot. it shouldn't kick in suddenly. it's probably dirty or possibly bad. good luck

thanks for the helpful advice - is pot cleaning something someone with little amp servicing experience can do? any tips on how to do it or contact cleaner recommendations?

Well, yes it's very easy to clean the pots, but anytime you have the chassis removed from the amp cabinet, you are exposed to very high voltage, with most Music Man amps 700+ volts! So, if you accedentaly grab or touch the wrong, it could be lethal. If I were in your situation, I'd try twisting the knob back and forth lots of times. This can kind of clean the pots and see if this helps. Tubes amps can be very dangerous. Find a good tech in your area, a cleaning shouldn't be much at all, if that's the problem.
