Had the tubes in my RP100 replaced and the amp re-biased. I put in a pair of Military Philips 6L6's recommended by one of the UK's top valve sources, who claimed maximum clean headroom - just what I'm after. But at stage volume, a low note will give a nasty 'crack'when the amp is set to high-power, although not when it's set to low. My amp man says this is sending too much voltage to the tubes - they just can't take it. Should I only use old, expensive Sylvanias to be safe? Thanks. Tony.

If I had to guess, I'd say that the amp should be biased properly. Don't remember what the rp's use but I'm assuming it has the same SS driver section as the second gen MM's. It should be adjusted per the instructions listed here on this site as far as current draw and go from there. THe JAN tubes should be pretty clean but the rp's DO have rather high voltage. I use JJ's in my MM's but they aren't the cleanest in the world. I think they would be fine for what you are doing but that's all subject to opinion. THe JAN tyubes should be biased properly and tried. You say they were "replaced". Does that mean you didn't just plug them in? You had them done by somebody else? You say it was re-biased but to what?

Use sovtek or svetlana "C" winged tubes.

Thanks guys. The supplier of the tubes gave me a replacement and the 'cracking' problem seems to be solved - maybe one of the tubes was just a bad 'un. Each time I have new tubes fitted, I'm expecting to gain a bit more clean headroom, but the amp sounds the same. Maybe I'm just playing louder as I get older, and expecting LOUD and clean...?

Wow, I have a 112RP65 and it can be as clean as clean can be until my ears bleed. Maybe you're hearing your speaker break up? I like winged SED, maybe get them with a high bias point?
