I was playing guitar RFL (Really F***ing Loud) with my wah and rack delay (the rack delay has a built in limiter/hardclipper for when the wah gets too 'boisterous'). This was into the reverb channel of my HD130 212 (12AX7 phase splitter tube). All of a sudden i could sense that therew as much more distortion in the signal (btw, i was running it on "HIGH", master volume up and tone controls pretty far advanced, with the preamp set to somewhere between 5 and 10) and then the pilot light DIMMED AND WENT OUT. Then i noticed an odd smell, like something was burning. I've never bust a tube before; was that what happened? I remember reading about the 12AX7 failing occasionally and that taking out the entire amp. Please tell me that didn't happen... i'd hate to junk this one. Could it be that i blew an input transistor by pushing the pre too hard? Couldn't be... could it? The amp DOES NOT power up at all as of right now, so I can't start diagnosis until it does. (the wooden baffling infront of the power tubes was pretty warm when i checked, but i couldn't tell if this was SOP or not) I'm waiting for it to cool off hoping that maybe it was just some kind of saturation-because-of-temperature problem or something else that's easy (and cheap!) to fix. I'll let oyu know later (like tomorrow or sunday) if it improves, otherwise assume i'll be needing help. | ||

Well try not to panic too much...My MM amp went dead once...It was because of a switch for a effect line in someone put on the amp...the other time my speaker wires were touching so it wasint working. I'm not an expert but I'd check to see if everything looks normal. | ||

Well i'm gonna hvae to bring this one into a Professional Amp Repairman. 'Cause i went out and got a four-pack of slow-blow 5amps to replace the fuse that died... It worked great. For a few minutes. I switched it out of standby and there was a nice 60hz hum sound from the speakers :| I thought "damn" but it went away in like three seconds. So I continued playing it, feeling it out. Moderate listening level on the non-effects channel. Okay, things are going good. Switch input plugs to the effects channel. Start playing with the tremelo and reverb, and I notice that the reverb is kinda 'fizzling'. Then I smell the same smell again. I got freaked and shut it off right there... The 4 power tubes light so it's not them but it could be anything from a transistor to a resistor to the 12AX7 (i can't see the damned thing and i can't pull it because it's got a shield. So I'm gonna bring it into the Local Guitar Store and have them replace the tube, and look at it. | ||

You might have a failing output tube or the 12AX7 and the smell you are experiencing is probably (hopefully) a plate or grid resistor. I sincerely hope it wasn't the output transformer you were smelling. Taking it to a shop that knows amps is a VERY good idea at this point. I wouldn't try to power it up anymore just in case. |
