I bought this 112-RD-100 head on e-bay a few years ago. It has GE 6L6GC Tubes in it. Somewhere along the line somebody cut a hole in the face and mounted a speaker in it. The speaker was gone when I got the amp. Anyway, the distortion sounds really crappy if I turn up the gain on either channel. Any idea what is causing this? If I want more gain and distortion I use a tube screamer TS7 w/brown MOD. This gives the amp a nice warm sound. |

A speaker installed into a MM head? the 112 is a combo...the distortion on my amp sounds like crap and sounded that way from day 1...was the speaker not 12 inch? |

The model # on my head says 112-RD-100. It is just the head. The hole the person cut in it looked like about an 8 inch hole. (That was simply a side note describing my amp.) I run a 4x12 Crate cab along with a whole host of analog pedals with my MM head. Does the distortion in all the RD heads sound that bad? |

Well I hate and always hated my distortion on my MM... as for what YOU hear, we cant tell, maybe its pretty bad since you seem concerned...If you could, I would post a clip of the bad distortion with a mp3

BTW: the tags are switched since you own a head...Interesting that the person put a speaker in a head...freaky seeing this short head making sounds |

Yea, pretty freaky alright. I will simply cut a new piece of wood and then put new grill cloth on it. I am also planning to put new hardware on it. But most of all I want to make it sound like it should. I'm not even sure whether it uses 6l6's or EL34's. I'm discovering that this amp has been abused by unknowing, uncaring individuals. I'm so glad I found this site |

Probably 6L6gc if it has the black face painted musicman badge and if it was made after 1979-1980... |

but then again, the badges are not right... get the chassis number and go to the www.musicmanamps.com for the schematics |

I looked at the model number on the back which says 112-RD-100 Chasis # 2100-RD-CAN...? Anyway, I know a head when I see it. It is indeed a 100W 2100 RD. I just need to restore a couple items. I think new tubes are in order as well. |

The "CAN" in the chassis number indicates that this unit was sold in the Canadian market. Probably not much different than a US one except maybe some small differences due to CSA safety approval as opposed to UL safety approvals. Steve

Steve, Can you give me any pointers on why the distortion sounds so bad and how I might fix it?? That is why I started this thread. |

I am telling all you 100 rd owners,if you hate the distortion sound of your head try these things they made a huge differnce in mine 1.change the mid pot from 2k to 10k 2.throw away those 6L6s and put in kt88s and (i have not done this yet but it can't hurt) change the opamp to the best jrc4558d (tube screamer opamp)you can find, only one prob if you love this head for sounding kinda like a fender don't touch it ,all these mods will kill that fender like tone . |
