Hi, I have been looking for the HD-130 212 with 12ax7 driver, but someone recently emailed me saying the solid state driver version was more ballsier, more Marshall like and that the 12ax7 version got mushy too fast and you have to turn it up to 4 where the ss ver. 1.5 to get a good tone. I always heard the opposite, but not have played the ss HD-130 I can't comment. Anyone? thanks! Ed | ||

Ok, from what I understand the 12ax7 driver sounds warmer and smoother from my experience and the SS driver maybe more punch not as sweet? Well the RD-50 had a SS driver a 12ax7 overdrive and after experimenting so much with the RD-50 I know that changing the cathode caps and reisitors (later revision) has a better overdrive if you are wanting less compressed tone. The early revisions had too much resistance at the plates and not enough voltage on the plates, grounded 2nd cathode, starving the plate voltage causing extreme compression (more muffled)where the later revision was much less compressed with a better crunch. I also found some nice tricks to warm up the amp make it more touch responsive tighter bass etc. I do remember the HD-130 having a nice tone when pushed too. I'm thinking about putting something together based on the HD-65/130 like power section and either the RD-50 preamp or the solid state preamp. Any thoughts on this? |
