My son brought his MM 65 back from a gig DOA. Found the speaker had shed a lead, but the ampstill did not answer the bell. Tubes glowing happily, but NO sound at any volume setting. I know having no speaker load is seriously serious for amps--does that suggest a place to start looking for a failure? (opened up the chassis, and it looks very clean and re-capped (unless MM used Mallorys). Thanks, Dave Gardner in Dubuque, IA | ||

Can I assume that you tried another speaker? If you did and still no sound, chances are that you smoked something like a tube or more likely, the ouyput transformer. Either way, unless you're comfortable playing around VERY high voltage, it's time for a trip to the doctor. Mike | ||

By all means, plug in another speaker or cabinet and make sure that you try the Primary or Internal speaker jack first, then try the other one as well. Depending on the model, the contacts of the speaker jacks may well include a switch which if open or corroded may prevent signal from arriving at the other jack! This is especially true of the heads that use series wiring on their output jacks! The second or "Ext. Cabinet" jack may NOT have any signal if the primary output jack has nothing plugged into it under these sorts of circumstances. Do NOT connect the original speaker, only a known good replacement all by itself to start. I am assuming the standby switch has been switched to the "operate" position. I have been bitten by overlooking this sort of of small detail before! If you cannot get sound under any circumstances then it needs to go to the amp doctor! Steve |
