Hi fellow Music Man Amps owners! I just bought my 112 RD 100 secondhand (of course, lol) from my local drugdealer (eg. music store). The guy who sold it didn't like the sound, so he had traded it in for a new Fender DeVille. I bought it for 2000 NKr (app 200 $) which I think was a good deal. So when I brought it home and plugged in my Les Paul it was like Christmas just a little bit to early... And I wasn't put down at first... Great headroom and great clean tone. But I felt something was missing. I had a matched pair of 6L6 that I always have since I have a few other valve/tube amps. So I switched the valves/tubes and I was strucked with a tone that was earthshaking Then, to test it for an ever better headroom I plugged in a 4x12 1960 Marshall stack. And now we were talking MUSIC!!! But then came the big disappointment. I started to check the installed speaker, and think it must have been a replacement. 'Cause the speaker was labelled CALVIN! So my big question to you is what should I choose to change it? I tested the Calvin on a couple of other amps, and that sound was awful. I know Music Man put EV speakers in on their upgraded combos. Can anyone tell me what they originally used. And what would eventually be an even better upgrade? (if possible) Hope you can help me I must also say that I'm glad the one who sold it didn't think og changing the 6L6's, and that there was such a junk speaker installed. Because when I'm through with all my small upgrades I know this amp will blow away the DeVille anytime

The original speaker was probably the standard Eminence that was built for them with their name on it. Don't really know for sur on the RD's but the earlier ones use them unless upgraded. Unless you go to a EVM, JBL or one of the Weber high power series, 100 watts is a lot to push though one cheap twelve. Are you sure it didn't say "Carvin"? Never heard of Calvin. I happen to like the Weber stuff because the people are great and so is the product. Go to their web sight-webervst.com and look around. THeir high power series is what you will probably need with that strong of a combo. I use the California's in my 2-10 65 and love them Mike.

the best thing i've found for those high powered 1x12 combos is the EMINENCE legend v12. it has 120 watt handling, and the projection is UNREAL. the mid ranges absolutely SCREAM, and even in the 1x12 situation the speaker will give you a nice full low end. www.avatarspeakers.com is a good, solid mailorder place that sells them individually at a very reasonable price. |

RD 112
HI GUYS - NEW HERE. I JUST PURCHASED A 112 RD FROM MY GUITAR TECH WHO IS PURGING ALL THE AMPS FROM HIS STORE B/C HE IS SICK OF THE B.S. AND HASSLE OF SELLING AMPS - WANTS 2 DEAL IN GUITARS AND GUIT. REPAIT ONLY. FAIR ENOUGH. HE SOLD ME A 112 RD FOR 250 - SAID IT WAS AS IS - IT STOPPED WORKING ---- COULD BE A BAD WIRE - - - OR A TRANSFORMER OR ANYTHING IN B/T. I LIKE THESE AMPS AS A GO TO - WORK HORSE AMP - I HAVE A HANDFUL OF VINTAGE FENDERS AND A FEW OTHER THINGS. WAS WONDERING WHAT I COULD DO TO MAKE THE AMP A BIT MOR " EXOTIC" SOUNDIND - MAYBE A CELESTION BLUE? OR AN EMINENCE LEGEND ( LOV THOSE - HAVE THEM IN 2 AMPS) THE AMP IS L. O. U. D. MAYBE THE E.V. IS WHERE 2 STAY ..... COOOOL AMP . ANY THOTS ON HOW TO UPGRADE THESE IN ANY WAY? ( THEY ARE COOL - AS IS ) BUT SEEM 2 HAVE A LOTTA POTENTIAL??
Well, it depends on what you
Well, it depends on what you want to hear. I went to weber builds of the old cerwin vega speaker for what I play through now. I REALLY like them but they are a very direct speaker. Not as bright as a jbl but more upper mids and they handle the lows real well. I either use a bassman head or my little NT15 for the small gigs as it gets REAL loud for as little as it is and I'm freaking old so I'm lazy as well! Anyway, they are bell clean when you want them but pedal well. You have to remember what the total POSSIBLE output of the amp is. You have to get a single speaker that will take the snot your are dealing it so that sometimes limits the choices, unless you want copped suey for a speaker sometime. The one thing I WOULD do if I had to do it over again is to get the weber cerwin speaker but have them build it with a softer dust cover. I opted for the stock button and I think it MAY soften up a little sooner with a paper cover. Just my 2c's worth. Mike.
Recone
My 2cents (Canadian) worth - if your RD-100 112 has the original EV in it, it would be well worth it to get it reconed. Even if you end up not enjoying the amp after that and decide to swap speakers, it would still be worth the investment. A vintage EV 12* speaker like that is certainly worth a recone and would be snapped up by somebody else with no problem.
Those EV's can be used for bass, pedal steel, synth, you name it.
Cheers,
Lars Verholt
RD 112 speaker replaced with a Legend
After much debate, research and some suggestions from other forums I would up getting an Eminence Legend V128 for my RD 112 One Hundred. In this thread, eric_ellman recommend the same thing a few spots up.
My original (18 pound) speaker was breaking up nastily at higher volumes and I was happy to find an excuse to get a lighter speaker.
The Eminence Legend V128 is very affordable, rated at 120 watts and didn't dramatically change the character of the amp at all. It's a bit fuller sounding, slightly less high end in a good way. Very happy with the choice and would recommend.
BTW, I'm keeping the original to eventually sell with the amp.....some day.....
