I have a 77 Music Man 212 65 with a US 120 power transformer. I am trying to decide what power rating of voltage converter (240-120/UK-US)I should use on a UK supply. The plate says 120V / 1.6A which is 192W so is 200W Voltage converter enough or should it be 300W for headroom or even more?

Here's an easy way. To your answer, no. Look at the fuse rating on the amp and use THAT for your computations. 4 amp at 240 volt is something like almost 1000 watts. Don't know what your amp pulls as max but even a little fudge on THAT would be a good thing. http://www.onlineconversion.com/ohms_law .htm

HMMMMM-after I posted that, I realized that tha current consumption will be based on 120 cvolts, not 240. You will still need 450+ watts to use safely.

Thanks Mike, I have a 5 amp fuse so I guess the max cut off before the fuse blows is 600W so it probably operates at ~300-400W. Anyone using a converter for a music man amp?

Actually the figures I gave above are correct 120V * 1.6A which is 192W. Just talking with a local amp repair guy and he said rule of thumb is 3x the amps output wattage so thats 65Watts x 3 = 195W rating. So I'm good with the 300W Voltage converter. |
