This may have been addressed already, but I want to share a nifty trick you can pull off with your Music Man amp. The rate of effect knob can be pulled out at any point and held static. Then the effect can be enabled/disabled via the footswitch. I have discovered that when the effect is held static (knob pulled out), it works as a nice tone booster. I use a tube overdrive in front of the amp, and when I switch on the phaser, it produces a nice fuzz-like tone. So what I'm saying is, if you've got an onboard phaser (such as my 212 HD-150), then you've got a built in tone/fuzz booster for solos, if you want it... Groovy eh? | ||

When Music Man changed to the 150 series in 1980/81, they replaced the tremelo circuit with a phasor. All 75 and 150 models have the phasor to my knowledge. It is a cool and unique feature! Steve | ||

It's their product name for a phase shifter. Just about every effects company has one. MXR phase 90/100, or EHX's Small Stone (didn't they have the Big Stone yester-years, or is my memory failing me). It was a very trendy effect in the late 70's. *Everybody was using it*. In some cases, it was even over-used.Already the tremolo circuit was pretty much looked at as a 'has been' effect. Obviously MM had recognized that, and had replaced the tremolo with a phase shifter. | ||

It's akin to a wah pedal. Set it at a specific point and you can get the precise tweak tone you want. Very cool. | ||

I have a phasor on my rp100. I like it a lot, but there's no way you can pull out that knob. Is it possible to mod it, or to add an expression pedal to it somehow? | ||

Yeah, the phasor-"moving in stereo". Try not to get dependent on it. The knob is so you can get the wave in synch with the band, I guess, though it seems to ride on the dynamics of string attack, ie., as soon as you start to really swat the strings, the phasor kicks in. Seems to drive the amp louder, and into more dirt. Yes, pull the knob out and the cycle is neutralized, but the drive remains. Still, I miss the tremolo on my missing HD 130. | ||

I designed the original phaser section in these amps. They may have undergone a revamp around 1981/2 when I left. For some units, you could quickly bring the Rate control to zero to freeze the phaser in place. It wasn't by design - it just happened that way on some units. |

I hardly ever used the phaser while gigging with my 210-75 RP thru the years, but I started using it in earnest when recording in my home studio...so many different sounds/effects you can get, cuts down on the amount of pedals...
I can't tell you how many times I got the ' WTF is that sound' look (in a positive way...I think) when I played the recordings for fellow musicians, especially 'axe men'
