Hi chaps- my 1st post! great place this. I have a MM 115HD 130, with a 15" 16ohm spkr in (and its a bass spkr too/ Im a 6-string gtr'ist). Ive sourced 2 basic Celestion 10" 8ohm, 80w(I think) spkrs which ok not perfect but should be better than the big G15B 16ohm (+ amp switch at 8ohm, happy enough it seems but this far from ideal too IMO). Obviously a new baffle/ grill needed: not a prob and 2x10 will fit the 24-1/2"W cab very well. Wiring, and ohm settings: can someone tell me how I wire them (is there a layman's series/ parralel diagram anywhwere?) their being 8ohms, and the amp switch either 8 or 4 etc? Id like to have them like the 2x10 130, presumably this is the way to go. Thanks, B-JILM | ||

Best way is to put both 8 ohm in parallel and put switch on 4. Then if you hook up an extension cab, you hav ethe option to switch to 8 as the output jacks are in SERIES. Hook both speakers together + to + and - to -, then the tip of plug in jack goes to + and sleave goes to -. Mike | ||

Great help- thanks. I was wondering what would happen if I used one speaker into each amp jack socket, but presumably thats a daft idea.. or is it? Id never use an extension cabinet so no need for the extra socket. Just curious. Ok so presuming this one spkr in each socket is daft, I will go parrallel into one socket switched to 4 ohms. thanks RC | ||

Each 8 ohm speaker into a separate jack would give you a 16 ohm total load on the 8 ohm side that is still a 100% mismatch. It won't generate full power. | ||

Mike- what is the difference between two 16ohm spkrs in parrallel into the 8 ohm switch, and two 8ohm spkrs into the 4 ohm switch? any? (the term 'load' is meaningless to me unlike for eg watts or sensitivity of a spkr you see). And what is preferable of these two parallel spkr configs into a MM 130, or, what is the difference/ why would s'one choose A from B.. a sonic difference? or is it purely a volume thing? or a differing strain on the transformer thing? If only valve amps were more simple.. I just want some sounds! thx BJilm | ||

In terms of sound, I can't see any difference with two 16 ohm speakers in parallel with the 8 ohm switch setting and two 8 ohm speakers into the 4 ohm setting. What I DO see as a difference is that with the two speakers in parallel, if one speaker takes a dump, you still have one speaker hooked up and thus still have a load on the amp, If you have two single speakers hooked in separately to both speaker jack, they are in series and if one opens up, you have an open circuit. That would not be good for the amp, not counting how crazy it makes you finding it. That's the only difference that I can see in choosing one over the other. Other than availability of a particular speaker load, that's my story and I'm sticking with it! Mike. | ||

Thanks Mike- read both replies/ other thread also. Great stuff ok I think its wise to stay with 2x8Ohm > the 4 Ohm socket.. not that Id be wanting/ needing an ext spkr but it just seems correct if nothng else, and as you say if one goes then the safety aspect is there. Gratefully- BJiLm. |
