I'm preparing to recap two Musicman Amps. * 212 Sixty-Five ('79 / EL34) Chassis 2275-65 * 212 Seventy-Five ('81 / 6L6) Chassis 2275-75 I've looked through the schematics, and taken the amps apart to confirm the inventory... I'd like to buy all my caps from one supplier, but there are only two that can fulfill the list. My concern is that they both carry very lost cost caps. (I like to save, but I'm not cheap ) * Just Radios in Canada (where I am) carry MIEC caps. * Weber of course has the Weber caps. Are those a safe choice, or should I source F&T, Illinois, Xicon, etc... ? If quality priority goes anywhere - should it be to the doghouse caps (100uf @ 450v), or the ones on the board (150uf @ 50v, 20uf @ 25v, etc...)?

Hi Sean, this is the one you want for the 150/50: http://ca.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Visha y-Sprague/TVA1311-E3/?qs=sGAEpiMZZMtZ1n0 r9vR22UzXQwAPJeqES1CcXAgZw2A%3d Here's the 20uF/25V: http://ca.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Visha y-Sprague/TVA12045-E3/?qs=sGAEpiMZZMtZ1n 0r9vR22fD1uTV3UxMjeE5JQESiBPc%3d Vishay/Sprague Atoms are among the most respected and for many the only acceptable replacement part in vintage gear such as these Music Mans. One caveat - I don't have a late version 2275-65 chassis to look at, so I can't tell if you can use the current skinny 100uF/450V Sprague Atom for the main filter or you need to use a different version. (It's approx 8 centimetres long and 3.2 in diameter). While you're in there, change the 150k/2W bleeder resistors too. Cheers Lars Verholt (in Canada)

So Lars, I guess your saying to source out the better quality / better named caps That is going to mean buying from 2 - 3 different suppliers, I can't find a single one that actually carries them all. Even Mouser doesn't stock that 20/25 your pointing to.

Mouser has this Sprague part number: 75-TE1206-E3 in stock. It's not Atom but in my opinion also acceptable. Cheers, Lars Verholt

Thanks Lars... Looks like I should be able to get a single order out of Mouser.

Remember, it's NOT necessary to be 20@25- it can be 20@50v or even 100v. The voltage rating is only critical if it is UNDER valued. You can always put in OVER valued caps as long as the mF rating is the same. Mike.

I used 3 different sources, (no, 4) to find the caps, diodes, and resistors to service my RD100 last year. I could have substituted values, but wanted to stay with the original spec components. I was, however, unable to find the correct protection diodes, and installed 3KV instead. |
