I just picked up a 110RD-50 that was in storage for a long time. It works fine for about a munute, then starts to emit a harsh distorted sound, mainly on the attack transient of each note. Thinking it was a heat related failure, I tried spraying the active components with freeze spray, with no luck. I don't think the problem is in the power amp section, but that is a guess. I would like to try and fix this on my own. I have some experience repairing older Fender tubes amps, but this is the first time I've been in a Music Man amp. Any help would be most appreciated. I should have clarified that when I said the amp played fine when first turned on, I meant it played fine at al volumes. After about one minute, it starts distorting at moderate volumes. However, it still plays fine at very low volumes. The distortion definitely sounds like something is overloading. Thanks, Mark | ||

Well, After giving up I decided to try a new set of output tubes, even though I was sure they weren't the problem. The distortion went away! I guess one of the tubes was microphonic. Live and learn. Mark | ||

I'm glad you found your problem! I would have guessed either an output tube or a power supply problem. You are lucky, it could have been far worse (like an output transformer)! | ||

Actually, I would have guessed a dirty tube socket, since you said it sat for a long time. You might, for clarity, clean the sockets and try the old tubes-they might NOT be bad. Just the mechanical action of taking the old ones out and replacing them with new ones might have cleaned the sockets enough to start working. I have "fixed" a lot of amps with just the basic cleanup of sockets and controls. Mike. |
