Just got a MM 65 head I guess its for either bass or guitar. I was hopeing to add it to my rig to use for a clean sound as I have got a Boogie MKIV that I use for distortion. Any way I am a little concerend about the solidstate preamp although it is suppose to have an ax12 in the pre amp. what do you guys think about the clean sounds are they good? As you might have guessed I dont have it in my possession just yet. | ||

The clean tones of Music Man amplifiers are their biggest feature! Ignore the solid-state preamp hype and any "tube-snob" opinions you might have heard and listen with your ears. This is, of course, assuming the amp is properly working and has been properly maintained. If it needs a cap job and new output tubes then it may not sound as good as it should. The Music Man amps are favored for their beautiful clean tones. They ROCK & Rule in this regard. Note: only the earliest versions of this amp had the 12AX7 phase-splitter tube. They ALL have solid-state preamp front-ends. Steve | ||

What Steve said. THe clean is what they are known for , although the dirty sound is ok if pushed hard enough(just most of us can't play that loud). You might want to re-cap it though as it's now old enough to drink(over 21) and if a cap goes, it will likely take out a transformer that is REAL hard to replace. I use mine every week and it stll honks after all these years, but I have to use pedals for the grit. Mike. | ||

Some sound dirty at lesser volumes. The manual says to use the low power selection when striving for distorted, spaced out sounds. You won't flay the speakers, designed with extra-gap for maximum acoustic energy transfer, as much. It is disturbing when the beast is a little too clean.... | ||

I pulled the original Sylvania tubes and put in some old ones from England which had dirty looking flashings so they sold cheap. These tubes bring a lot of $ when pristine. The numbers were high according to the seller, and his honest description enabled me to get a pair for my 65 2-10. Damn they sound so good. The sylvies are so tight that I could get no distortion. I was about to look elsewhere for amp action until this discovery. At 6 on the right vol knob with the left one at 9, it is like whipped cream. Just amazing tonal difference. These are single coils (Fender Musicmaster flush pole from 57-60 era) and I am thinking of being buried with them. I can't part with mine either. Someone with a stereo can use the sylvies, use them for the latest germ war news or maybe for Sigfrieds Tod und Trauermarsh. I wanna rock, just like hanna montana and all the little future porno stars being harvested at disney! | ||

The distortion gets better when you stick em both at 9. Never sure which is the master...is that the one on the right??? These old tubes are simply blowing my mind. I want more... |
