I finally found a Music Man resource! Nice site.

I have a 112 RD 100 that is in very good to excellent condition. I am trying to verify if it has an EV speaker in it. According to your model chart I would expect to see "EV" on the chassis, but I don't. It has a huge magnet about 6 inches in diameter and weighs a ton. Serial number DP00309.

I'll be sending in pictures of it for the photo archive, but I'm also interested in selling it, so knowing what a reasonable price is for this amp would be helpful. I haven't really used it in 5-6 years and I think it still has the original tubes.

Thanks,
Todd

I don't think you'll find an EV anywhere on the unit, not even on the speaker!

The factory E-V models were covered in White Pinwal Tolex (a vinyl "ribbed or grooved covering looking similar to corduroy cloth). If yours is black then it probably left the factory with something other than an E-V in it (unless it was a special order).

The chassis and serial number sequence is the same on all amps of the same model line with no special "EV" markings... it was the white Tolex that was the main clue. All normal production white pinwal Tolex amps came with E-V EVM series loudspeakers from the factory to my knowledge.

The E-V magnets are HUGE... bigger than 6" across to my recollection. The E-V magnets are about 2/3 the diameter of the whole frame!

Weigh your amp and compare its weight to an E-V model. There is a large enough difference between stock & E-V to make weighing it of value in a comparison sort of way.

I have seen pristine 112RD-100 models sell for upwards of $500 on eBay and listed for 25% more than that in Music Store ads. The more typical price range for a decent original condition with a few bumps and bruises is $300-$425 on eBay... lower if a partial basketcase or really beat-up. Of course, this does not take the $50-$65 shipping charges into account.

Send a photo of your speaker/magnet if you are still unsure.

Thanks, Steve!

I just weighed it on my old (but fairly accurate) bathroom scale. It came in at 59 lbs with the power cable and footswitch. As soon as I can get a photo I'll send one.

That WEIGHS like an E-V model. Is it white or black?

Hi Steve just found your great site on Music man
I have been constantly using an rd 100 with E.V since 1982 .
This amp has toured with me all over australia and has never let me down however it has just started to introduce a bit of background hiss and hum but thats not bad for 20 years of constant work.I susspect all the caps need replacing what are your thoughts.

The first thing I would do is to replace every electrolytic capacitor in the amplifier! I would also change-out any resistors that are obviously discolored from heat.

After this is done, I would isolate the different amplifier stages to determine where any residual hiss and hum are coming from (if any). Check and clean all pots, switches and jacks (use a contact cleaner/treatment like DeOxit or Cramolin Red).

Assuming all the active circuits are functioning properly, there isn't much left to do other than to ensure all wiring and solder-joint integrity and perhaps install a fresh set of output tubes.

The amp will then be ready for the NEXT 20 years! These amps are really built to last. Hopefully the loudspeaker components are not deteriorating at a faster rate than the electrolytic caps!

How much is a 110 RD 50 in great shape worth these days? What kind of speaker (original) is in this amp?

I was tempted to do the same! I was getting tired of "Twinks"!

Ray:

A 110RD-50 and 112RD-50 are desirable models because of their size and weight (high power to weight ratio). I would search eBay for the small RD50 amps to get a good idea of the current market. They typically sell in the top 25% of Music Man prices.

I believe the original loudspeakers were made by Eminence.
