Greetings. I would like to thank Steve Kennedy and to all who have contributed to this wonderful site. I am new to tube amps.Recently I came across a Music Man 212-HD One Thirty.Condition is very good. No rust on the chassis/hardware.No modifications. All original except for tubes.Tubes are GT-EL34 Groove Tube and 12AX7A/EH Amper(?)made in Holland. I am not experiencing any problems other than tube rattle when you tap them lightly(when cold/ when turned on you get a different sound from the tube). Going by speaker code it was built in 1977.I will be getting amp checked soon.Is there anything that need to be looked into or replaced due to age. To my ears the tubes that are in there now are nice sounding.Any suggestions on replacements? Has anyone tried out the new Groove Tube GT-6CA7 GE?They are very limited in quantity and expensive. Any input will be appreciated. | ||

I use the JJ E34L's in my MM and love them. They hold up well(considering they're in a 210-65 that gets pushed), sound great and they're really pretty cheap. Eurotubes.com for great stuff. Bob's a nice guy and will handle all your questions. Mike. | ||

Forgot to mention that that amp is old enough to be re-capped by now and should be done as a preventive measure. A filter cap going south will likely take out an expensive to replace transformer and caps are cheap insurance. One of my MM's from the past had ALL Amperex in it. Sounded great and I still have them with almost no hours on them. They DID break up real early though and gave it a real marshally sound which didn't work with what I was play so they went in the storage box. THe JJ's fit the bill now. I have numerous sets of NOS Sylvania 6ca7's to compare them to and the JJ's win. Mike. | ||

Hi Michael, You got me wondering if I should have my Music Man 2/12 65 (ax7 tube) go in the shop for a re-capping for a preventive measure. I've been using this amp just about every weekend since I got her in back in 1977-78. All That's been done in the shop is new tubes now and then, and have a loose wire joint fixed. I'm not having any problems with her and sure would like to keep it that way. Thank you for your time, Dave. | ||

A small amount of prevention goes a long way! If you have if in to do the caps, I would suggest having the sockets re-tensioned just in case too. It make save you from some pops and crackles later. Mike. |
