my MM 65 head is sounding bad. i plugged it into my 115rhseventy five cabinet, and turned it on. the volume was low, really low, and the sound was all frappy, distorted and thin. i have never had any problems with this amp before in ten years. it sat unused for a few weeks and i have heard that the filter caps can dry out and cause this problem. it is my favorite amp, please help. | ||

It could be tubes but is more likely to need a cap job and/or some other repairs. All of these amps are 20-30 years old (yours is closer to 30) and are long overdue for a capacitor replacement and a tune up so it can last another 25 years! You'll probably have to take it to a technician if you don't do your own work. Find a Fender technician and send him here for the schematics and biasing information. Steve | ||

These amps are getting old and if you have changed tubes a lot or they just sat for a long time, you might need to re-tension the tube socket. Or clean them-about the same thing. Tighten up the grippers and spray some de-oxit in them and wiggle them around and you might be surprised. I would at least do that while servicing anyway. I've "FIXED" quite a few with something this simple. MIke. | ||

I totally agree with Mike... we tend to look for the more exotic causes of common problems when a retension and contact treatment might make such symptoms disappear and stay away for another 2 decades! Get some DeOxit or Cramolin and clean all sockets and jacks while you are in there (Phone jacks and RCA jacks). Try the simple stuff first! I have repaired more gear with simple fixes than with complex solutions. Steve |
