You guys shure know a lot of things about vintage gear I have a 212RH130 speaker cabinet and would like to exchange my svt-III pro for a music man amp (I play a '72 Jazzbass). I could buy a HD-150 for a good price. Is this a good amp head or should I go for a HD-130? Could someone maybe try to explain the difference in sound? Also I'd like to get another speaker cabinet, I can choose from another 212RH130 and a 115RH65. What do you think works better with my existing 212RH130? I aim for a warm yet punchy 70ies funk/soul/disco sound. Hope you can help me on this one Cheers Christoph

Joe, both the 130 and 150 HD heads are reliable units. The difference is merely 20 watts. the 130=130 watts RMS, and the 150=150 watts RMS. Steve Kennedy, the moderator of this site, and Mike Kaus are both more knowledgable about the electronics of these heads than I am, but I CAN tell you that they are both very clean amps. The resident power in the wattage isn't so much for additional volume (although they are both LOUD!!) but for lots of head room in order to play clean at high volume levels without breaking up. Either one would be a good bet for club venues and can drive just about any speaker configuration you can throw at it as long as the resistance doesn't fall below 4 ohms total. That's about all I can tell you about these two heads...and most of this I've picked up on this website over the last couple of years. Good luck on your bidding! MusicMan amps in general are getting harder and harder to find in good shape to buy because when you get a good one, you hang onto it! Personally, I own two and am very attached to both of them.

Joe! Just discovered what you need to know on this site: Go to the thread immediately under this one "System Questions, Solutions and Problems" and look toward the bottom for "130HD vs. 150HD." It has all the info you want on comparing them. Hope it helps...

thanks john, that made up my mind about the amp head. i think i'll go for the hd-150. i really would like some info on the cabinets, and maybe how i have to connect them to the head to get good performance and the right impedance. any suggestions?

Well you can begin by searching the older entries on this web site, or, start a new thread asking for input (pardon the pun) on your questions about speaker cabs. People on this site are very helpful and at all stages of experience with MM amps. First off, I'd stop off in the section on this website called "Speaker Impedance, Wiring and Switch Settings"...it has a lot of information you'll find helpful. Hope you win the bidding for the new HD-150!

Thanks for helping John & Carlos. Just got the 115 Cabinet (with EV speaker), wich makes the sound so much more defined and balanced with my svt 3 pro... The hd-150 should arrive in a week or so, I just hope it delivers the sound I expect. Christoph |
