Greetings: I just purchased a 210 HD 130 and am in thg process of checking it out. It's pretty on the inside, has the original speakers, and footswitch. Looking from the transformer toward the side of the cabinet, the tubes are as follows: Sylvania big-bottle EL34/6CA7, Int'l Servicmaster EL 34, Int'l Servicemaster EL34, then another big bottle Sylvania EL34/6CA7. Is this a decent tube setup, are should I change something out? The seller gave me a set of extra tubes, buy they're 6L6WXT Sovteks, which, from what I gather, will not work. Any comments about that? I'll see about having it re-cap'd some time in the near future. Apparently, the two Sylvanias are a pretty good tube to have, so I'll leave them. Thanks in advance.

Brian, from your tube description I can see two problems immediately...although I'm sure you enjoy the sound of your amp "as is"...1)you're not running a matched "quad" of tubes which for optimum sound and balancing of your bias the tubes must be matched (a set of four from 2 different manufactures' is possible to match, but you need a good tube tester or VOM to do so....most likely scenario is that this set of four tubes is NOT matched). 2) given the age of your 130 watt combo you should probably change out all of those old electrolytic capacitors. if you like the sound of your amp now....do the necessary maintenance work and you will LOVE the sound of your amp! DO NOT INSTALL THE 6L6WXT TUBES IN THAT AMP! your amp was designed around the 6CA7 tube and your best bet these days is JJ E34L tube as replacement due to their ability to handle the high plate voltages of the music man amps from this period (it should run in the neighborhood of 725 vdc). other el34-type tubes will WORK, but the JJ seems to work best (btw., JJ makes two tubes of this type, you want the E34L and not the EL34). ed

Thanks for the information Ed. I missed the post the last couple of times I was here. Since then, I bought a couple of used Sylvania 6CA7's from Doug Fink. They seem to work fine but there's a little rattle on some bassy notes. Do you know anyone in So Cal. who can be trusted to work on these amps? I'd like to have the cap's replaced soon. Thanks. |
