Get rid of the carbon resistors in your Music Man amp. They go off-tolerance when they get old or beat. I suggest precision metal-film resistors. Don't forget the ones under your amp beside the main filter capacitors. I just checked those in my HD150, and they were out by 12%. I replaced the ones on my driver board and in my power supply last year, as most of them were out too. No harm in using higher wattage resistors either. Don't forget to discharge your filter caps before touching anything. Cheers! | ||

Actually, being out by only 12% isn't that bad. Those resistors probably weren't THAT much closer when they were new! If they are out grossly, 50% or more, yeah, you need to do so but if they are in spec at all, I wouldn't. THe ones exposed to heat, I ALWAY used metal OXIDE flameproof though. | ||

I wound up leaving the ones by the filter caps alone, because it's a bitch putting the three leads back in the eyelet hole, as I discovered when changing the diode - even after suctioning out all of the solder. The ones in the driver board were quite a bit out though, so I feel justified in having changed those. I did put flameproof 470 ohm resistors on the power tube sockets. Thanks for the input, Mike. |
