Here is my 1981 MusicMan 100RD.As you can see i did a little work on it(man i hope they don't think this amp should have been listed in the hall of shame).first as you can see chrome chicken head knobs not plastic real metal ones, and yes i still own the original witch hat ones.Next i got rid of the "Mr Coffee light and replaced it with a nice red jewell one(i almost went with purple). The tubes are Electro-harmonix KT88's with high temp silocone damping bands and spring tube hangers(yes i still own the original tube clamps for 6L6).Last but not least I changed the pots ,mid pot went to 10k and bass to 100k(not sure if i'm sold on the bass pot yet but the mids got way bigger but a bit more bass in them as well,so i'm tinkering with that at this time). This amp not sounds like a amp i would want to love and keep,it has alot of differn't tones you can get ,everything from really agressive heavy metal to blues to country, just not with the same settings(lol).that is the only drag of such a versitle amp ,one set of tone knobs for all channels, but i must remember this amp was made in 1981,not 2001.so let me know what you think.

Cool Tubes... I haven't seen many people use KT88s in a Music Man! Steve

Steve,I went with kt88's because I had heard all the great reviews of the kt type tubes, the 88's were able to handle that massive plate voltage .only prob as i have said it does run the fender kind of tone out of town for a more marshall/mesa tone .but it does make that ss overdrive useable, very useable.

well,Mike I got a great deal on mine, they are electro harmonix that i got on sale. When these go though I would love to try some of genelex,or tubeart or something like that but i must say these are the best sounding tubes i've heard in this head.(the ruby 6L6 strs weren't bad either but these sound better to me)

How did you change the pilot light?
Bill Traylor (bozzy369) Username: bozzy369 Registered: 02-2008 |
oh that was fun!I took off the old pilot light cover, epoxied the screw in base to the light frame, drilled out the faceplate and chasis hole, then screwed the lens to the base, then hit the base with some solder to the chasis for abit more support.sounds crazy but i did not want to change out the bulb and socket to fender ones which are way different, may get brave in the future and try that if the bulb ever burns out and i can't find a replace ment ,who knows?
